Your privacy

The Queensland Law Reform Commission values the privacy of every individual and is committed to protecting the information it collects and uses by complying with its obligations under the Information Privacy Act 2009 (IP Act).

The IP Act sets out how Queensland public sector agencies collect and handle personal information. This includes any information that identifies you or could reasonably identify you.

We comply with the Queensland Privacy Principles (QPPs), which is part of the IP Act. These principles outline how we must:

  • collect personal information
  • use and share it appropriately
  • keep it secure and accurate
  • allow you to access and amend it.

Collection and use of personal information

We collect personal information only when it’s reasonably necessary for our work - usually when you provide it directly, such as through a submission, registration, enquiry or other interaction with us.

We use your information only for the purpose for which it was collected unless you provide consent for another use. We only share your information with the people or organisations we told you about at the time of collection or when we are allowed by law.


Email communications

Emails sent to us are public records and retained as required by the Public Records Act 2023. Your name and email address will not be added to a mailing list or shared with third parties without your consent, unless required by law.

Emails may be monitored by authorised IT staff for the purpose of system troubleshooting and maintenance.


Website information and cookies

We use cookies to collect non-identifying data about how visitors use our website. Cookies are small files stored on your device that help us understand how you interact with the site, improve site performance and make your experience better.

You can manage cookie preferences in your browser settings. Disabling cookies may limit some website features.

When you visit our website, anonymous data is collected by our servers, including your browser type, device, visit times, pages viewed, referring site and general demographic data. This data is used to analyse and improve our site. It does not personally identify you.

If you prefer not to have this data collected, you can opt out by adjusting your ad settings or installing the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.


Website security

Our website does not provide secure transmission facilities. Please be aware that there can be risks in transmitting information across the internet.

It may also contain links to non-Queensland Government websites. We are not responsible for the privacy or security practices or the content of other websites.


Accessing and amending personal information

You have the right to access personal information we hold about you. You can request that we amend your personal information if it is inaccurate, out of date, incomplete or misleading.

Before making a formal amendment under the Right To Information Act 2019 (RTI Act), we recommend that you contact us first to make an informal amendment.

Accessing Other Information

We collect and hold information as part of government functions. Under the RTI Act and the IP Act, you can request access to non-personal information about our services, finances, policies - unless disclosure is against the public interest.

Before applying, check if the information is already available on our website through our publication scheme or disclosure log.

To access information not publicly available, you can submit an RTI application.

Please note:

  • RTI applications incur an application fee.
  • IP access requests (for your personal information) do not incur a fee.

Making a privacy complaint

Mishandling personal information can have serious impacts - not only on individuals, but also on their families, communities and the organisations involved.

If you believe the Queensland Law Reform Commission has not handled your personal information in line with the IP Act, you can make a complaint.
